This is a rare convertible model, which was formally sold by Dodge from just the 1989 through 1991 model years. As a matter of fact, there were only 779 convertibles 4x4s, with automatic transmissions produced in 1989.

The Dakota Convertible features a really simple design, consisting of a single metal roll bar and a basic manual top. When the top is folded down, it hangs into the bed, supported by steel cables on either side. The conversion was done by ASC, which at the time stood for American Sunroof Company but later became American Specialty Cars. ASC was responsible for a variety of convertibles and other oddball conversions during the 1980s and 1990s, including the Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder, the Porsche 944, the Toyota Camry Solara and many others.
